Inside and Outside: Through The Looking Glass

2023. Graphite on Paper, 16" x 20"

Holding a transparent glass bottle to my eyes, I attempt to explore the dual experience of “seeing” and “being seen.” Distorting, enlarging, and exaggerating my vision, the bottle transforms my view of reality into an inverted reflection of the real world. The wooded area outside the square frame appears upside down, symbolizing a subversive and reversed perspective. In this inverted reality, the girl in the frame (me) becomes both the observer and the observed. As the viewer, you observe these inverted natural landscapes, while the girl in the square frame (me) uses the bottle as a medium to observe the outside world in a refracted lens. The interactive experience of this work aims to illuminate the idea that everyone's perspective is influenced by their own experiences, emotions, and ways of thinking, underscoring the importance of examining our own way of observation and how we establish connections with the world around us.
