BioMass Observation Drawing

2023. Charcoal on Wood Panel, 14" x 22"

Exploring my school’s BioMass sustainably forested wood burning facility as a part of my junior-year art course, I was amazed by the complexity and fluidity of the structures. I decided to draw this piece from observation, capturing my feelings of awe in the moment. Responding to the grain of the wood panel, I incorporated the organic elements into my drawing. The enormous facility seems drastically complex at first; however, when you move closer into smaller details, the quality of each pipe becomes clearer, portraying the idea of how the BioMass facility can only function as a whole when each smaller, simpler detail is able to function on its own as well. The industrial interior atmosphere of both mechanical elements and space offered a different approach to studying perspective, form and function, composition, and relative value system.
